Founded on June 23, 1883, the Percheron Horse Society of France opened the stud book for the breed that year. At the same time it outlined the region of origin for Percheron horses, stretching across fifty cantons and the four departments of the Orne, Eure-et-Loir, Loir-et-Cher and Sarthe.

The town of Mamers and the Saosnois have always been a part of this said cradle of the Percheron breed. One of the main towns of this historic area, Mamers (along with Nogent-le-Rotrou, Mortagne-au-Perche and La Ferté-Bernard) has on many occasions hosted the National Percheron Horse Fair that takes place in September each year.

Nowadays the Percheron horse is on the rise once more after almost half a century in the doldrums, and has strong presence in the Saosnois and the Perche. A number of breeders now perpetuate the bloodlines of what was once considered the king of the draught horses.

The former farm horse has found a new purpose as a leisure horse, both for riding and for drawing carriages, and visitors can use them to explore the natural heartland of the Saosnois and the neighbouring Perche region.
